On Scamapalooza I spend a lot of time talking about how people get scammed but very little time asking why? What is it that makes some people click reply on a dodgy email while others send it straight to the trash? Are some people more gullible than others? Or do con artists have a unique skill of taking advantage of our own psychological weaknesses?
If anyone has the answer it is Art Maines. Art is a clinical social worker, psychologist and one of the hosts of Scammercast. He works with the victims of fraud to understand why they got swindled and helps make sure that it never happens again.
On this week’s episode, Art and I look at the psychology of scamming and unpack the reasons why some members of society or more likely to get swindled. He also talks about his book, Scammed and offers some insight in the mind of the con artist.
In his podcast Scamapalooza Nicholas attempts to separate facts from fraud as he explores the worlds of deception, illusion and swindles with the rogues gallery of writers, magicians, comedians and confidence artists that are his guests.
